Bandeja and Vibora: technique and selection

The bandeja and vibora serve different tactical purposes. A bandeja prioritizes control and placement, used when an opponent hits a high-quality lob that forces a defensive position. The goal is to keep the ball behind the service line, preventing the opponent from reaching the net. In contrast, the vibora is an attacking shot intended to win the point, utilizing wrist movement to generate power and side spin.

Technique differs significantly between the two. For a bandeja, contact occurs in front of the body with a flat strike, while the vibora requires contact around head height to facilitate side spin. A common mistake is waiting for the ball rather than moving backward immediately. Quick footwork and early preparation are essential for both. The vibora requires more time to set up, making it unsuitable against opponents who hit fast, aggressive lobs. Players must adjust their movement based on the incoming lob, prioritizing a quick retreat to ensure the contact point remains optimal.
